What Is Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo?

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a false sense that your body is moving. Positional vertigo is a condition of the inner ear and is the most common type of vertigo. It is typically brought on by a
change in position that shifts your ear’s movement-seeking crystals. Some of the crystals can become dislodged and float around the inner ear, or they get caught in the circular canals of the inner ear. When the crystals find themselves in the canals, they stimulate sensors inappropriately, causing vertigo.

What is Vestibular Therapy? How Does It Work?

Vestibular therapy is an approach used by physiotherapists to treat vertigo. It includes various techniques to help relieve dizziness, nausea, or imbalance. During the therapy, physiotherapists facilitate a series of movements which allow the crystals to move back where they belong. After the treatment, you may be asked to complete simple exercises at home, which can help move and keep the ear crystals out of your canals. The goal with the in-clinic and at-home vestibular treatment is to reduce the symptoms and risks of vertigo.

Is Vestibular Therapy Right for Me?

West Physio treats patients who have Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. There are other, but less common, causes of vertigo, such as certain medications, head and neck injuries, and strokes. If yours was caused by something other than BPPV, then you’ll need to consult with your doctor or physician to determine the best course of action. If it’s determined that you have BPPV, then our physiotherapists may be able to help you. Reach out to schedule an appointment today.
